ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — After a strong sixth-place performance out of 16 teams in its last competition, The University of New Mexico men’s golf team is back in action this weekend heading to the Aggie Invitational hosted by Texas A&M Saturday, April 6 – Sunday, April 7. The tournament will take place at the par-72, 7,146-yard course at the Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas.

The field for the Aggie Invitational consists of 13 teams including six Golfweek/Sagarin-ranked squads: No. 1 Oklahoma State, No. 2 Arizona State, No. 10 Texas Tech, No. 12 LSU, No. 24 Baylor and host No. 27 Texas A&M. The rest of the field consists of Kent State, Lamar, Michigan, in-state rival New Mexico State, North Texas and Washington.
Oklahoma State took home first place last year at the Aggie Invitational and has clinched the win four times in the tournament’s 13-year history. This season, Oklahoma State has carded five team wins and is sitting first in the Big 12 Conference as it is shooting -7.32 vs. par.
The Lobos enter the tournament following a sixth-place finish out of 16 teams at the National Invitational Tournament (N.I.T.) with a score of 22 under, 842. The squad finished first overall in par-3 scoring with an average of 3.05 (+3) and landed in fifth in both pars (168) and birdies (58). Senior Sean Carlon finished eighth at the N.I.T. with a score of 207 (-9) to earn him his second Mountain West Golfer of the Week honor of the season.
UNM faced Arizona State and North Texas at the N.I.T. as the Sun Devils took first with a score of 50 under, 814 and the Mean Green tied for 10th with a three over, 867.
As a team, UNM is currently fourth in the Mountain West with an average score of 288.41 in 27 rounds of work. The squad is shooting 2.63 vs. par and holds a low-round score of 275. Carlon is fifth in the Mountain West individually as he is averaging 71.78 over 27 rounds, shooting just 0.33 vs. par. Redshirt-sophomore Ross Sinclair follows for the Lobos as he is in 16th in the conference, shooting 1.07 vs. par while freshman Sam Choi’s 1.11 vs. par puts him in 19th.
Round one of the Aggie Invitational is set to tee off at 6:30 a.m. MT on holes #1 and #10 and will be directly followed by round two. The third and final round is set to begin on Sunday at 6:30 a.m. MT.
