ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Three Lobos are one step closer to their NFL dreams as Jalin Burrell and D’Angelo Ross have signed undrafted free agent contracts with the Kansas City Chiefs and the New England Patriots respectively, and Delane Hart-Johnson has signed a free agent try-out camp invitation with the Seattle Seahawks.
Burrell was signed as a free agent by the Chiefs, who lost to the Patriots in the ACF title game in 2019. Burrell, whose PFF numbers graded out very well, started 24 games for the Lobos, and he was a terrific coverage corner and a sure tackler. Last year he was sixth in tackles with 52, and he tied for the team lead in pass break ups with six. He had an interception and two fumble recoveries, including one for a touchdown against Air Force.
Ross was signed as a free agent by the Patriots, winners of Super Bowl LIII 13-3 over the Los Angeles Rams. Ross turned some heads with a terrific Pro Day in which he ran a sub 4.3 40-yard dash and had a 39-inch vertical leap. Ross started 23 of 24 games in his career and was tied for third on the team in 2018 with 57 tackles, including two for loss. He tied for the team lead in pass break ups with six and had an interception in UNM’s win over New Mexico State. He also forced a fumble.
Hart-Johnson was a four-year member of the Lobos, and earned a rookie minicamp invitation with the Seattle Seahawks. A starter the last two seasons, Hart-Johnson led the Lobos in receptions (33), yards (507) and he tied for the team lead in touchdown catches with five. He had an eight-game streak during the season of multiple-catch games, and in 2015, he set a UNM record for longest touchdown reception in a bowl game with a 92-yard catch against Arizona in the Gildan New Mexico Bowl. On that catch he outraced his brother Will Parks to the end zone, and Parks is currently with the Denver Broncos.
The Lobos additions give UNM seven players on NFL rosters as the three new NFL signees join Byron Bell of Green Bay, Glover Quin of Detroit, Corey Bojorquez of Buffalo and Jason Sanders of Miami.
