DAY 1 RECAP

BERKELEY, Calif.— The University of New Mexico concluded the Brutus Hamilton Invitational with four event wins and five runner-up finishes on Saturday at Goldman Field at Edwards Stadium on the campus of the University of California.

The Lobos swept the high jump competitions with wins from Brent Dionisio and Ada’ora Chigbo.

Chigbo won her third event in as many weeks with a clearance of 5-6.00 (1.68m), clearing her first bar on her first attempt for the win, as UNM ultimately took first and second in the event. Chigbo was the only competitor to clear 1.68m. Shannon Fritz finished second after clearing 5-4.25 (1.63m) on her first attempt at that bar, finishing runner-up on attempts.

Dionisio was the only competitor in the men’s high jump to clear a bar to win the event, clearing 6-6.00 (1.98m) on his first attempt at his first bar to claim the win.

Camillo Dünninger posted an event win and a runner-up finish on the day, taking the top spot in the javelin with a throw of 194-03 (59.22m) on his final attempt. Dünninger’s mark was substantially better than the second-place finisher, who threw 168-02 (51.25m) as his best mark. All five of Dunniger’s legal marks would have won the competition. In men’s pole vault, Dünninger cleared his first two bars on his first attempt before missing his first attempt at 15-0 (4.57m). The sophomore would clear it on his next attempt, which would prove to be the last bar he cleared. His performance resulted in a runner-up finish based on attempts.

Ben Parmoon won the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.76, 0.29 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher, while UNM had another top finisher in Isaac Cole, who finished fourth after clocking 49.43.

UNM went 2-3 in the long jump with Ryan Chase earning a runner-up finish on his second-to-last attempt, recording a mark of 23-8.75 (7.23m). Chase had just two good attempts in the competition and was just 0.01 meters off from the event winner’s best mark. Alvin McCray placed third with his fourth-round mark of 23-5.25 (7.14m).

Cathilee Mullings took second in the triple jump on a jump of 39-2.25 (11.94m), which she achieved on her sixth and final attempt. Her fourth jump would have also been enough for second as well.

Allison Mady secured second-place on her sixth attempt as well, throwing 42-10.75 (13.07m) in the shot put, her second runner-up finish in four weeks while also tallying a win at the home meet two meets ago. Like Mullings, Mady had another attempt that would have qualified as the second-best throw in the competition, although hers occurred on the round prior.

UNM had multiple top-five finishers in the long jump with Diamond Black, Cathilee Mullings and Akeisha Ayanniyi finishing third, fourth and fifth, respectively. Black jumped 17-10.25 (5.44m) on her first attempt of the competition, which would hold as her best mark to finish third. Mullings needed her fifth attempt to produce her best result, a mark of 17-9.00 (5.41m) and Ayanniyi had her best mark on her third jump, a 17-8.25 (5.39m).

Katherine Whiting finished fourth in the pole vault with a height of 11-9.75 (3.60m), of which she cleared on her second attempt. She was one of two competitors who finished at that height, but took fourth on attempts since the other competitor needed one fewer attempt to clear the bar.

The Lobos recorded a pair of fourth-place finishes in the 800-meter run with Steffi Jones running 2:09.81 and Ian Crowe-Wright running 1:51.63 in their respective races.

Parmoon was the top Lobo finisher in the 200-meter dash, running a 22.25 to place fifth, but was just 0.06 seconds behind the third-place finisher, who also was the top collegiate finisher.

On the day, UNM finished with 11 entries finishing in the top-three and 16 finishing in the top four of its events.

Up next for the Lobos is the Masked Rider Open hosted by Texas Tech, scheduled for Saturday, May 4.
