Mountain West Tournament Preview

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The Mountain West announced the 2019 Men’s Tennis All-Conference teams at the annual awards banquet prior to the start of the 2019 Mountain West Conference Tournament, and The University of New Mexico was well represented.
 
Three Lobos, Ricky Hernandez Tong, Dominic West and Stepan Holis were all named to the Mountain West All-Conference team in singles, and the doubles team of Hernandez Tong and Holis were one of six doubles teams honored as well.
 
For Hernandez Tong, it’s the third time in his career, and third straight season, that he was named All-Mountain West.  West was named All-Mountain West in doubles in 2017, but this is his first honor in singles, and for Holis it’s his first honor.
 
The three Lobos are all tied for the team lead in wins in singles with 22.  UNM was the only team to get three singles players on the All-Conference team.  Hernandez Tong, a senior, is 22-13 on the season, and in the fall season he won the 2018 ITA Mountain Region title.  He has played at No. 1 singles all year for UNM and he is a two-time Mountain West Player of the Week.
 
West, a junior, is 22-7 on the season, mostly playing at No. 2 singles, and he also has a Mountain West Player of the Week award to his credit.  Holis, a junior, is 22-9 on the season, mostly playing at No. 3 singles.
 
Hernandez Tong and Holis have been formidable at No. 1 doubles for UNM, going 12-7 overall and 9-6 at the No. 1 slot.
 
UNM opens its 2019 Mountain West Tournament at 9 am Pacific/10 am Mountain in Fresno, California against No. 8 seed Air Force.
