ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico men’s golf team is set to compete at the 2019 Mountain West Men’s Golf Championship this Friday, April 26 – Sunday, April 28 in Tucson, Ariz. The competition will take place at the 7,194-yard, par-72 Catalina Course at the Omni Tucson National Resort.

UNM enters the tournament tied for first in the Mountain West rankings with UNLV, both of which are shooting 1.97 vs. par. Colorado State is also averaging 1.97 vs. par, however an extra round under its belt has it sitting third in the conference.

The Lobos have taken home the Mountain West title five times throughout the tournament’s 19-year history (2003, 04, 05, 06, 13, 14) and are tied for first with UNLV with five team wins. Additionally, the Lobos have finished in the top-five 15 times since the tournament began in 2000 as they hold three second-place finishes, one third-place finish and three fourth-place and fifth-place finishes. The Rebels return to the competition as three-year defending champions.
UNM enters the tournament following a sixth-place finish at the PING Cougar Classic hosted by BYU on April 19-20. Freshman Sam Choi and sophomore Galven Green both recorded top-10 finishes at the competition as Choi tied for third with a 208 (-8) and Green’s score of 212 (-4) tied him for 10th. As a team, UNM recorded a score of 852 (-12) in the competition and finished third of the six Mountain West squads competing.
UNM is bringing a young squad to the competition that includes three freshmen, a sophomore and a senior. Senior Sean Carlon and sophomore Galven Green along with freshmen Sam Choi, Ignacio Arcaya and Roy Choi will all be teeing off for the Lobos.

Carlon enters the tournament ranked fourth in the Mountain West as he is shooting 0.27 vs. par. The senior’s top finish of the season occurred on Feb. 21-23 at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate hosted by Hawaii as he finished tied for fourth with a score of 209 (-7). He has shot his low-round score of 67 twice this season, once at the National Invitational Tournament (N.I.T.) hosted by Arizona and the second occurring at the PING Cougar Classic. Carlon has three top-10 finishes on the season and has received two Mountain West Golfer of the Week honors on the year. Carlon finished tied for 21st last year at the MW Championship as he shot a five over, 221.

Sam Choi recorded his top finish of the season at the PING Cougar Classic which was the final tournament of the Lobos’ regular-season schedule. Choi also logged his low-round score of 68 in that tournament to add to his score of 208 (-8) which tied him for third out of 90 competitors. The freshman has three top-10 finishes on the season, tying for first on the team with Carlon.
Sophomore Galven Green

Green enters the Mountain West Championship as UNM’s sole sophomore competitor after finishing tied for third last year at the competition with a score of 209 (-7). Green shot his low-round score of 66 in his second round of the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate hosted by UNM on September 28-29. The sophomore recorded both his top finish of the season and his first top-10 finish at the PING Cougar Classic as he tied for 10th with a score of 212 (-4).
Freshman Ignacio Arcaya

Arcaya recorded his top finish of the season at the Pioneer Creek Collegiate hosted by the University of Minnesota on September 8-9 as he finished tied for 22nd with a score of 221 (+5). The freshman shot a low-round of 65 at the Arizona Intercollegiate hosted by Arizona on January 28-29 to mark the lowest-scoring round posted by a Lobo this season.
Freshman Roy Choi

Low Round: 69
Roy Choi enters the weekend shooting an average of 74.41 strokes in his 12 rounds of work. Choi registered his top finish of the season at the Pioneer Creek Collegiate as he tied for seventh with a score of 215 (-1) to give him his first top-10 finish of his career. The freshman holds a low-round score of 69 which came in the second round of the Arizona Intercollegiate on January 28.
Round one of the 2019 Mountain West Men’s Golf Championships will tee off on Friday at 8:00 a.m. MT and will be followed by round two on Saturday and round three on Sunday.
