SAN JOSE, Calif. – The University of New Mexico baseball team lost the second game of their weekend series at San Jose State University by a score of 8-3 on Saturday afternoon at Municipal Stadium.
In the loss, the Lobos fall to a game under .500 overall at 15-16 and are two game under in Mountain West play at 6-8. The Spartans, however, improved to a game over .500 overall at 16-15 and have widened their lead in the conference now at 10-4.
On Saturday, the Lobos held a pair of one-run leads and had the bases loaded twice over the first three innings, but were only able to push across a pair of runs. The first came in the top of the first when Justin Watari scored on a groundball double play. San Jose tied the game up in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly, but a two-out single to centerfield off the bat of Reese O’Farrell in the top of the second gave the Lobos another one-run lead, this time at 2-1.
The third inning was the turning point in the game. In the top of the inning, the Lobos loaded the bases with no outs thanks to consecutive singles by Tyler Kelly, Hayden Schilling and Jared Mang. Despite that great run-scoring opportunity, the Lobos were unable to push across a run.
In the bottom of the third, the Spartans scored three runs on four hits to take a 4-2 lead.
The Spartan lead continued to grow as they plated single runs in the fourth and fifth innings and two runs in the seventh to account for their eight runs in the game. The Lobos’ last tally came in the top of the eighth as Connor Mang scored on a passed ball. The Lobos would threaten one final time in the ninth as they loaded the bases to bring the potential tying run to the on-deck circle, but once more, the Spartans pitching kept the Lobos off the board.
The Lobos and Spartans will conclude their three-game series on Sunday afternoon. San Jose will be looking for the sweep, while the Lobos will be looking to salvage a game in the series. First-pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. (MT).
