Lobos Complete Weekend Sweep of Abilene Christian

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— The home court advantage held true for The University of New Mexico beach volleyball team as the Lobos earned their second sweep of the weekend over Abilene Christian on Sunday morning at Lucky 66.

After honoring the three seniors on the team and recognizing the entire Lobo squad, the team went to work and had similar outcomes to the day prior.

Although the lineups changed from Saturday to Sunday, the results did not as UNM won in straight sets on all five courts.

The only court that didn’t change for UNM, court five with Jaclyn Inclan and Claire Nenninger, also didn’t have a change in score from the first matchup, as the Lobos won with identical scores of 21-10 for the second-straight day. In the first set, Inclan and C. Nenninger used a late run to stretch their lead to nine at 18-9 and allowed just one more point before winning 21-10. In the second set, the Lobos led 9-4, a lead that grew to eight at 16-8 on the way to a 21-10 victory.

Carly Beddingfield and Joey Benson moved to the fourth court and the duo found themselves in a battle early on. After building an early 4-0 lead, ACU won nine of the next 14 points to tie the set at nine. However, UNM went on a run of its own, pulling away 18-9 en route to a 21-11 first set win. The second set was much closer as the Lobos couldn’t create much separation before taking the set 21-19 for the Lobo team point to make it 2-0 UNM.

Playing on the second court for the first time this season, Lauren Twitty and Dali Rosado dominated with a 21-7 first set win and ran away with a 21-13 second set to secure the team point and clinch the win for UNM.

The third court with Abbey Willison and Emily Nenninger was the fourth court to complete its matchup, with a 21-14, 21-17 win.

Completing the day was Yasmin Tan and Morgan Schreckler on the No. 1 court, winning 21-14, 21-16 after two back-and-forth sets. ACU and UNM were tied at 13 and again at 15 in the second set before UNM used a 4-0 run to create separation at 19-15 and won two of the next three points to seal the win.

With the two wins on the weekend, UNM holds a 6-10 overall record.

The Lobos next travel to Houston, Texas for four matches next Thursday, Friday and Saturday.  UNM will play two matches against Texas A&M-Kinsgville, a team the Lobos faced earlier this season, as well as Houston Baptist, another team the Lobos have played in 2019. UNM won both contests. The final match will be against Tarleton State.
