TUCSON, Ariz. — The University of New Mexico men’s golf team finished sixth of 16 squads at the National Invitational Tournament (N.I.T.) hosted by Arizona on Tuesday. Senior Sean Carlon led the Lobos as he finished eighth overall to mark his third top-10 finish of the season.

Carlon finished the tournament with a final score of nine under, 207 after shooting an even 72 in his third round of work. The senior averaged 2.92 (-1) in par-3 scoring and 3.93 (-2) in par-4 scoring as he led the team in each of those categories. Carlon also carded the most birdies for the Lobos as his 15 on the tournament fell just five behind the tournament leader (20).
Coming in six strokes behind and finishing tied for 26th was senior Augistin Holé who recorded a three-round total of three under, 213. Holé was one of just four competitors to register two eagles in the competition, one in both the first and third rounds, and his team-leading average of 4.25 (-9) on par-5 scoring landed him second overall in the category.
Freshman Sam Choi and redshirt-sophomore Ross Sinclair came in third and fourth for the Lobos as they each recorded a two under, 214 to finish tied for 30th overall. Choi posted his best score of the competition in round two as he shot a 69 (-3), while Sinclair took off a stroke in each round to card a third-round score of two under, 70.
Sinclair shot a team-high 39 pars in the tournament, putting him just one behind the tournament-leader’s 40.
Sophomore Galven Green also shot a 70 (-2) in round three to bring his tournament score to an even 216. Green finished the competition tied for 41st after improving 12 spots on the leaderboard across his three rounds of work.
As a team, the Lobos finished sixth with a score of 22 under, 842 while finishing first in par-3 scoring with an average of 3.05 (+3). The squad registered a combined total of 168 pars and 58 birdies to put them fifth overall in both categories. UNM topped three of four Mountain West opponents including UNLV which finished seventh with an 844 (-20), San Diego State which finished ninth with an 854 (-10) and Wyoming which recorded an 883 (+19) to finish 15th.
Colorado State, the fourth conference opponent at the tournament, finished just one stroke ahead of New Mexico with a 25 under, 839.
Taking first at the tournament and sitting 21 strokes ahead of second place was Arizona State which carded a 50 under, 814. USC finished second with a score of 29 under, 835, while Oklahoma came in just one stroke behind with an 836 (-28) to finish third.
Redshirt-junior Mark MacGrath, who competed as an individual for UNM at the Sonoran Showdown, finished 10th out of 21 players with a score of four over, 214. MacGrath recorded first- and third-round scores of 71 (+1) and a second-round score of 72 (+2).
The Lobos will be back in action on Saturday, April 6 through Sunday, April 7 as they head to the Aggie Invitational hosted by Texas A&M in College Station, Texas.
