Men’s Golf Heads to 2019 Lamkin San Diego Classic

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico men’s golf team is set to continue its spring season on Monday, March 11 through Tuesday, March 12 as it heads to San Diego, Calif. for the 2019 Lamkin San Diego Classic hosted by San Diego State and the University of San Diego. The competition will take place at the 7,033-yard, par-72 course at the San Diego Country Club located in Chula Vista, Calif.

The field for the competition consists of 15 teams including four Mountain West squads: New Mexico, Air Force, Colorado State and San Diego State. The rest of the field is made up of Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, Louisiana, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ole Miss, Saint Mary’s, San Diego, Texas and Washington.

The Lobos will face both Texas and Arizona State which are the eighth and ninth ranked teams in the nation, respectively. So far this season, Texas has posted an average team score of 282.67 and is shooting -2.33 vs par. Ninth-place Arizona State, which is fourth on the Pac-12 leaderboard, is averaging 285.83 strokes and is shooting 1.27 against par. The Wildcats also have one tournament win under their belt.

Of the Mountain West teams competing at the tournament, Colorado State ranks highest in the conference in fourth place, shooting 3.42 vs par and holding an average team score of 289.53 with three wins on the season. The Lobos are sitting one place behind in fifth with a 3.76 score vs par and a 288.90 average. San Diego State is seventh place in the MW with a 4.78 score vs par, while Air Force is in 11th with a 13.43.

Senior Sean Carlon leads for New Mexico individually in the league as his 0.67 score vs par and average score of 71.95 puts him 11th overall. Freshman Sam Choi follows in 25th place with an average of 72.81 shooting 1.52 over par. 

UNM enters the tournament following a 13th-place finish at the John Burns Intercollegiate on February 21-23. The squad shot four over, 868 in the tournament with Carlon tying for fourth overall with an outstanding score of seven under, 209 to earn him a Mountain West Golfer of the Week honor. Carlon notched 13 birdies in the tournament, while senior Augustin Holé was one of just six competitors to card two eagles in the three rounds.

The Lamkin San Diego Classic will tee off on Monday with round one beginning with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. and will be directly followed by round two. Round three is set to begin on Tuesday at 9:00 a.m.
