Lobos Head to Arizona for the Wildcat Invitational

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico women’s golf team is back in action on Monday, March 11, 2019 as it travels to Tucson, Ariz. for the Wildcat Invitational hosted by Arizona. The Lobos will compete against a strong field of 17 teams at the 7,283-yard, par-72 course at the Sewalio Golf Club.

Four of the 17 teams competing in the tournament are Mountain West squads including New Mexico, Fresno State, San Diego State and UNLV. The rest of the field includes Arizona, Arizona State, Denver, GCU, Iowa, Iowa State, Long Beach State, Michigan, NAU, in-state rival New Mexico State, Oregon, Oregon State and Purdue.

UNLV, which won the tournament in 2018 with a score of -17, holds the number-two spot on the Mountain West leaderboard with an average score of 294.67 in 21 rounds of action. The Rebels are shooting a score of 7.24 vs par this season and have one tournament win under their belt. San Diego State is sitting fourth in the Mountain West with a 15-round average of 297.07.

Fresno State’s average of 298.50 in 18 rounds puts the squad in sixth in the MW, while the Lobos are in ninth with a 304.94 average over 18 rounds. Senior Darian Zachek leads for New Mexico individually in the conference as she sits 25th overall with an average score of 75.28 and a 3.61 score vs par.

UNM enters the tournament following a tough outing at the Bruin Wave Invitational hosted by UCLA and Pepperdine, finishing 15th with a score of 90 over, 954. Freshman Kamie Hamada led the team at the tournament, shooting a 14 over, 230 and finishing tied for 29th. Hamada posted the most pars on the team in the tournament (34), while Zachek’s six birdies gave her the fourth most in the tournament.

Arizona State, which the Lobos will face again at the upcoming competition, took third place at the Bruin Wave Invite with a score of 35 over, 899 and was just four strokes away from first-place Stanford which carded an 895 (+31).

The first two rounds of the Wildcat Invitational will tee off on Monday with a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start and will be followed by round three on Tuesday beginning at 8:00 a.m.
