MANOA, Hawaii — The University of New Mexico men’s golf team finished 13th of 20 squads at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate hosted by the University of Hawaii on Saturday. Senior Sean Carlon finished tied for fourth overall and was just two strokes behind first place.

Carlon posted his lowest score of the tournament in round three with a four under, 68 to bring his three-round total to a seven under, 209. The senior improved his score in each round of the competition and led the team in both par-4 and par-5 scoring. Carlon’s low third-round score came with the help of five birdies after carding four in both of the first two rounds.
Finishing second for the Lobos was sophomore Galven Green who recorded a combined score of 219 (+3) with a low first-round score of four under, 68, good for 55th overall. Trailing by two strokes and landing in a tie for 64th was senior Augistin Holé who shot his lowest score of the tournament in round three, a 70 (-2), after posting his second eagle in the round. Holé was the only Lobo to record an eagle at the tournament and was one of just six competitors to card two.
Sitting just one stroke behind was freshman Sam Choi who shot four over, 76 in the round to bring his three-round score to a 222 (+6).
Choi, Carlon and Green each recorded 13 birdies throughout the tournament, while Carlon and Holé led the squad in pars, each with 35.
Junior Mark MacGrath improved nine spots on the leaderboard to land in a tie for 102nd after posting his lowest score in round three with a one over, 73. MacGrath took nine strokes off of his second round score in round three and carded five birdies after seeing just three in both of the first two rounds. The junior wrapped up the competition with a total of 16 over, 232. Freshman Ignacio Arcaya followed by one stroke, shooting a 233 (+17) and finishing tied for 104th.
As a team, New Mexico finished the competition in 13th place with a team score of 868 (+4). The Lobos recorded 159 pars, 47 birdies and two eagles while coming in sixth overall in par-5 scoring with an average of 4.58.
Arizona State took first at the tournament, shooting a combined team score of 24 under, 840. The Sun Devils led the competition in pars (174) and par-5 scoring with an average of 4.50. Following by just three strokes and taking second was Texas A&M which shot nine under, 279 on the day to bring its three-round score to a 21 under, 834. Duke took third, shooting 845 (-19).
The Lobos will be back in action on March 11-12 as they head to the Lamkin San Diego Classic hosted by San Diego State.
