MANOA, Hawaii — The University of New Mexico men’s golf team is sitting in sixth place out of 20 squads after one round at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate hosted by the University of Hawaii. Sophomore Galven Green is tied for fourth overall after six birdies and 10 pars put him just two strokes out of first place.
Green had an outstanding performance on the course on Thursday as he carded a four under, 68 and led UNM in par-4 scoring with an average of 3.80 (-2). The sophomore also found himself tied for second in the tournament in par-5 scoring with an average of 4.25 (-3). Also tied for second in par-5 scoring and coming in second for the Lobos was senior Sean Carlon who registered a one under, 71 in the round and is tied for 22nd overall.
Freshman Ignacio Arcaya came in just two strokes behind and is tied for 42nd after recording a first-round score of 73 (+1). Arcaya led the Lobos in pars with 13 in the round, sitting just three away from the round-one leader who had 16. Freshman Sam Choi followed for the Lobos, shooting a three over, 75 while recording an even average of 3.00 in par-3 scoring. Senior Augistin Holé registered the only Lobo birdie in the first round of action as he wrapped up with a score of 76 (+4).
Competing as an individual for the Lobos is redshirt junior Mark MacGrath who shot a five over, 77 on the day.
As a team, UNM recorded one eagle, 16 birdies and 55 pars and led the competition in par-5 scoring with an average of 4.45 (-11). The Lobos posted a combined score of 287 (-1) to put New Mexico in sixth place on the leaderboard. The Lobos trail fifth-place Duke by two strokes and are just seven strokes behind first-place BYU which shot a first-round score of 280 (-8).
Individually, first place is held in a tie between BYU’s Peter Keust and Washington State’s Daniel Kolar, both of whom shot a six under, 66 in the round.
Round two of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate will tee off with a shotgun start on Friday at 11:00 a.m. MT followed by round three on Saturday.
