Lobos Set to Compete at John A. Burns Intercollegiate

MANOA, Hawaii — The University of New Mexico men’s golf team is headed to Manoa, Hawaii for the 43rd John A. Burns Intercollegiate hosted by the University of Hawaii taking place this Thursday, February 21 through Saturday, February 23. The Lobos will face a field of strong competition at the tournament as they play at the par-72, 6,991-yard Wailua Golf Course in Lihue, Kaua’i.

Senior Sean Carlon is set to compete in the tournament after being honored as the Mountain West Men’s Golfer of the Week on Wednesday. The honor comes after his standout score of seven under, 206 led him to a 12th-place finish at the Arizona Intercollegiate to start the spring season. Carlon registered 39 pars throughout the tournament, just three away from the tournament leader. He also saw an average of 3.0 in par-3 scoring and -4.0 in par-4 scoring, tying him for eighth overall in par-4 scoring. 

The field for the John A. Burns Intercollegiate will consist of 20 teams including three Mountain West squads: New Mexico, Fresno State and UNLV. The remaining competition includes Arizona, Arizona State, BYU, CSUN, Duke, Grand Canyon, Hawaii, Long Beach State, North Carolina, Northern Colorado, Saint Mary’s, Texas A&M, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, UTEP, Virginia and Washington State.

Of the Mountain West opponents, UNLV is ranked sixth in the conference with an average of 287.13 strokes over 15 rounds. The Rebels are sitting just one place ahead of New Mexico (7th). The Lobos hold an average of 288.83 over 18 rounds of work. Fresno State is in 10th place in the conference, averaging 293.07 over 15 rounds.

Carlon leads the Lobos on the Mountain West leaderboard, tying for 18th overall with a score of 1.17 vs par. Freshman Sam Choi sits just six spots behind with a 1.44 score vs par, putting him in 24th in the MW. UNLV’s senior Harry Hall is ranked 4th overall in the conference, shooting -0.33 vs par.

The Lobos are looking to stay hot at the tournament after their seventh-place finish at the Arizona Intercollegiate on Jan. 28-29 that consisted of seven teams ranked in the GolfStat Top 50. Carlon led the Lobos with his 12th-place, 206 (-7) finish, while freshman Ignacio Arcaya trailed by just three strokes, carding a 209 (-4) and leading the squad in birdies (12).

Round one of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate is set to tee off on Thursday, February 21 at 11:00 a.m MT followed by round two on Friday and round three on Saturday.
