Lobos Head to the 2019 MW Championships

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —  The University of New Mexico women’s swimming and diving team will head to Minneapolis, Minn. for the 2019 Mountain West Swimming and Diving Championships. The four-day championship is set to begin on Wednesday, Feb. 20 at 12:30 p.m. CT/ 11:30 a.m. MT. The meet will be held on the University of Minnesota’s campus at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.

The Lobos enter the championships currently having 20 total swimmers in the top 10 in the Mountain West, including six in the top three. 

Senior Adriana Palomino holds the top times in the 500-yard freestyle (4:43.77) and the 1650-yard freestyle (16:14.63). She is also currently second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.44) and third in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:11.18). Sophomore Klara Farkas is currently ranked third the MW in the 500-yard freestyle (4:48.19).

For the divers, freshman Jocelyn Gallais leads the MW in the platform with a score of 229.75. Junior Natasha Dark holds two sixth-place MW rankings in both the 1m dive event (292.95) and in the platform (211.10).

Last year at the MW Championships, the Lobos set four new school records and placed sixth in the team standings with a final score of 673.50.

Both senior Emily Huffer and Palomino had second-place finishes in the 200-yard butterfly and the 1650-yard freestyle, respectively. Huffer captured her own school record with a final time of 1:59.25 and Palomino broke her own school record with a final time of 16:22.34.

Sophomore Matea Sumajstorcic broke a school record in the preliminary round of the 400-yard IM with a final time of 4:19.65. She re-broke the record after placing sixth in the A-final posting a time of 4:19.33.
