Griffin Wins 200-Meter Dash to Lead Lobos at NAU Tune Up

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz.—
  In an appropriately named meet, The University of New Mexico track and field team sent three runners and five field event participants to compete in five events at the NAU Tune Up on Friday as a last test before the Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championship start on Feb. 21.

The Lobos had three top-five finishers, including one win and one runner-up finisher.

Jay Griffin produced the lone event win on the day for the Lobos, winning the 200-meter dash in 21.22, 0.39 seconds faster than the second-place finisher.

In the women’s high jump, sophomore Ada’ora Chigbo posted a second-place result with her height clearance of 5-9.25 (1.76m), while teammate Shannon Fritz placed finish behind a season-best. clearance of 5-5.25 (1.66m).

Finishing just outside of the top five but having a season-best performance was Katherine Whiting in the pole vault, finishing in sixth with a 12-4.5 (3.77m). Behind her in a tie for ninth was Fritz, who passed 11-10.5 (3.62m).

Rounding out the entries in the meet was Allison Mady in the shot put, who threw a 44-2 (13.46m) for her best mark of the competition, resulting in a seventh-place finish.

In the men’s 60-meter dash, Elijah Lilly qualified for the finals with a time of 6.85 in the preliminary round, which marked a season best for the sophomore by 0.24 seconds. Griffin ran 7.03 to finish just outside of the qualifiers and Lawrence Johnson tied his season best with a 7.14 time.  

UNM hosts the MW Championships at the Albuquerque Convention Center starting on Thursday, Feb. 21.
