ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— Sophomore Weini Kelati has garnered her second Mountain West Female Track Athlete of the Week honor of the season on Tuesday, as announced by the conference office.
The selection marks the second weekly conference award of the season for Kelati, the third for the women’s team and the fifth for the team this season. Kelati also won the award two weeks ago on Jan. 29.
Kelati earned the honor after running the 3000-meter run at the prestigious Millrose Games in New York on Saturday, in which she broke the UNM school record.
The Virginia native ran 8:53.98 to finish sixth among some of the best runners in the country, breaking the school record by 3.49 seconds and her personal best by 5.79 seconds.
The time also marked the third-fastest time in the NCAA this season and in addition, was the third-fastest time in the 3000-meter in the history of the Mountain West.
Kelati now owns two school records, having also set the school record in the mile on Jan. 26 with a time of 4:33.35.
This season, Kelati ranks in the top five in the NCAA in three events.
Her time in the 5000-meter is the second-best in the NCAA this season, behind Ednah Kurgat; her 3000-meter run is the third-best time in the NCAA this season while her mile is the fourth-best time in the NCAA this season.
In the Mountain West, her mile and 3000-meter times rank first and her 5000-meter time ranks second.
