Oregon Sweeps Lobo Men’s Tennis 7-0

EUGENE, Ore. — The Oregon Ducks swept the doubles point and then picked up all six singles wins to defeat the Lobos 7-0 as UNM fell to 1-2 on the season and Oregon jumped to 6-1.
 
Doubles went Oregon’s way, although it was a close battle.  The Lobos lost at No. 3 and No. 2 doubles as Oregon went up 1-0.  At No. 3, Casey Recci and Tim Buttner fell to Thomas Laurent and Emmanuel Coste 6-2, and at No. 2 Dominic West and Facundo Bermejo lost 6-4 to Ty Gentry and Joshua Charlton.  No. 1 doubles was halted at 5-5 in a great battle, as UNM’s top team of Ricky Hernandez-Tong and Stepan Holis were even at 5-5 against the No. 38 ranked Armando Soemarno and Charles Roberts.
 
Two singles matches were over quickly as at number five singles, Oregon’s Charlton defeated UNM’s Bermejo 6-0, 6-1, and at number one singles, in a match featuring a pair of ranked players with UNM’s No. 23 Hernandez Tong, Oregon came out by an identical 6-0, 6-1 score.
 
From there, things were much tighter.  The Ducks clinched the win at number three singles as Gentry took down Holis 6-2, 6-4.  The other three singles matches all featured first set tiebreakers, and all three went to Oregon.  Riki Oshima at number four singles won his tiebreaker over Buttner 7-5, and UNM lost the other two tiebreakers 7-4 as West lost at number two to Coste and Recci lost at number six to Roberts.
 
UNM couldn’t replicate that effort in the second sets, losing all three, ending the match at 7-0.
 
The Lobos head back on the road next weekend to take on Loyola Marymount at noon on Saturday, February 9.Doubles Results
