ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—  Some of the top talent from the top schools in the country will be in attendance this weekend as The University of New Mexico track and field team hosts the New Mexico Collegiate Classic.

Among the teams competing in the two-day meet held at the Albuquerque Convention Center will be two of the top 10 women’s teams in the latest FloTrack team rankings, No. 3 New Mexico and No. 7 LSU. In the USTFCCCA National Track and Field Rating Index released this week, New Mexico was in eighth and LSU in 11th.

On the men’s side, the LSU Tigers enter the meet ranked fourth in the USTFCCCA poll, followed by Arkansas in 17th. In the FloTrack rankings, LSU is tied for fifth and Arkansas is tied for 16th.

In addition, other ranked schools competing are UCLA, with the women tied for 18th in the FloTrack rankings, as well as fellow Pac-12 schools Arizona, with the Wildcat men ranked 26th by the USTFCCCA and tied for 23rd by FloTrack and Arizona State, where the women are ranked tied for 25th by FloTrack.

Other schools with entries for the meet will be UNLV, San Diego State, Air Force, Fresno State, UC Davis, Colorado Mesa, CSU-Pueblo, UC-Colorado Springs, Adams State, UTEP, Sacramento State, Concordia (Calif.), San Francisco State, Cal Poly, New Mexico State and Azusa Pacific.

As aforementioned, the Lobo women are ranked third in the FloTrack rankings and eighth in the USTFCCCA rankings released on Monday. On Thursday, the Lobo women were further acknowledged for their distance success by being named the best #EventSquad in the 5,000-meters and second in the mile by USTFCCCA.

Further enhancing the momentum for UNM is the fact that in each of the home meets this season, a Lobo has set a school record in an event, with the Lobos setting a school record in a total of three events this season.  Ednah Kurgat started the season by breaking her own school record in the 5,000-meter race on Dec. 1 in Boston, followed by Jay Griffin IV setting the program record in the 200-meter at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Collegiate Invitational, only to beat it the following week. Weini Kelati broke UNM’s mile record in Saturday’s meet as well.

For their latest performance on the track, the Lobos earned their third and fourth Mountain West Athlete of the Week selections on Tuesday with Griffin and Kelati garnering Men’s Track Athlete of the Week and Women’s Track Athlete of the Week, respectively.

The meet will start on Friday at 4 p.m. MT with the women’s weight throw, the men’s high jump, women’s high jump, men’s long jump and women’s long jump. Also taking place on Friday will be the men’s pole vault at 5 p.m. and the men’s weight throw at 6:45 p.m.  The track portion of the day will start at 5 p.m. with the men’s open unseeded 400-meter dash. Taking place after that will be the women’s unseeded 400-meter, the men’s and women’s 3,000-meters, both seeded and unseeded races, followed by the men’s and women’s 600-meter and the men’s and women’s 200-meter. The last event (the women’s 200-meter dash) is scheduled for 7:10 p.m.

Saturday’s events will begin at 10 a.m. with the women’s shot put and the women’s unseeded pole vault. Track events will begin shortly after at 10:30 a.m. with the qualifying round of the women’s 60-meter hurdles.
