Men’s Golf Finishes Seventh at Arizona Intercollegiate

TUCSON, Ariz. — The University of New Mexico men’s golf team finished in seventh place at the Arizona Intercollegiate hosted by Arizona on Tuesday. Freshman Ignacio Arcaya posted a big third round, registering six birdies to help the squad chop off nine strokes from round one to round three.

Arcaya recorded a six under, 65 in round three and was just one of nine competitors to shoot a 65 or lower throughout the tournament. He led him team in birdies (12) and shot 36 pars through three rounds of action. Overall, Arcaya shot a three-round score of 209 (-4) and finished the competition tied for 23rd (second on the team). 

Leading for New Mexico was senior Sean Carlon who posted his lowest score of the competition in round three with a three under, 68 after recording back-to-back scores of 69 (-2) in the first two rounds. He registered 39 pars in three rounds, just three less than the tournament leader (42). Carlon wrapped up the tournament in 12th place overall with a combined total of 206 (-7). 

Finishing third for UNM (tied for 45th) was sophomore Galven Green who also posted his lowest score of the competition in round three with a two under, 69. He recorded 32 pars and 11 birdies in the competition to round out his final score of 215 (+2). Coming in just one stroke behind was freshman Sam Choi whose three-round total of 216 (+3) landed him in a tie for 51st.  

Both Sam Choi and freshman Roy Choi recorded 37 pars over the three rounds. Roy Choi finished with a combined total of 219 (+6) after recording his lowest score of the competition in round two, a 69 (-2). 

As a team, the Lobos finished the competition in seventh place with a three-round score of 836 (-16). The squad improved its score in each round of competition, chopping off a grand total of nine strokes between round one and round three. UNM fell just one stroke behind sixth-place UCLA and four strokes away from Iowa State and Texas A&M which tied for fourth.  

The Lobos beat out some tough competition including BYU which posted an 843 (-9) for ninth place, UTSA which shot an 853 (+1) for 10th and in-state rival New Mexico State which posted an 866 (+14), good for 16th place. 

Clinching first place overall was host Arizona which shot a low score of 263 (-21) in the third round of action to record a combined score of 37 under, 815. Coming in three strokes behind and taking second place was Arizona State with an 818 (-34). St. Mary’s followed by 16 strokes, shooting an 831 (-21) and taking third. 

The Lobos will be back in action February 21-23 as they head to Manoa, Hawaii for the John Burns Intercollegiate hosted by Hawaii.
