ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— The University of New Mexico track and field team returns to the Albuquerque Convention Center this Saturday for the New Mexico Collegiate Invitational.

The meet begins at 9:30 a.m. MT with the women’s weight throw as well as the women’s and men’s high jump. The track portion of the meet begins at noon with the women’s 600-meter run. There are 12 field events scheduled (six men and six women), and 22 track events (11 women and 11 men) on the schedule, with the last event at 3:45 p.m. in the women’s 4×400 relay.

Competing in the meet are Washington State, Grand Canyon, Cal State Northridge, Utah, Arizona State, Boise State and New Mexico State.

UNM heads into the meet following a successful weekend at the Dr. Martin Luther King in which the Lobos won three events.  Ryan Chase started the Lobos off with a win in the long jump, surpassing the 24-foot mark for the time in his indoor career to earn the event win. Kristian Hansen won the mile (4:12.95, 4 :07.44 converted), while the men’s 4×400 relay ended the meet with a time of 3:11.92 (3 :12.36 converted) to win in the event.

Additionally, of note was Jay Griffin IV, who set the school record in the 200-meter dash, registering a time of 21.08 (21.15 altitude conversion). His 21.15 official time was .21 seconds faster than the previous time set by Carlos Salcido. On Saturday, Griffin will run the 200-meter at 2:35 p.m., joined by Alejando Goldston, Salcido and Elijah Lilly. Lily and Griffin are placed together in heat three of the 60-meter dash at 12:35 p.m.

On Tuesday, Chase was selected as the Mountain West Men’s Field Athlete of the Week after setting two personal bests and competing in a total of four events. The senior selection was UNM’s first men’s indoor athlete of the week for a field event since Allan Hamilton was selected on Jan. 26, 2016.

Chase won the long jump with a personal-best 24-3.50 (7.40m) that he achieved on his third attempt. Currently, Chase has the second-best mark in the Mountain West Conference, sitting just 0.01 meters and 0.25′ behind the conference leader.

The next day, Chase competed in three more events: the 60-meter hurdles, the 400-meter dash and the shot put, setting another personal best in the hurdles. After running an 8.58 (8.60 altitude conversion) in the preliminary round, which tied his personal best, Chase improved on his time by .08 seconds to set a new best with an altitude-converted 8.52, finishing fifth in the final.
