ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico men’s basketball team is set to host the Utah State Aggies on Saturday at 2 p.m. on CBS Sports Network inside Dreamstyle Arena – The Pit.
New Mexico enters Saturday’s game 1-1 in its last two conference games including a 30-point victory over Wyoming and a 16-point loss on the road at UNLV while Utah State enters Saturday on a three-game win streak including 15+ point victories over Wyoming, San José State and Colorado State.
Utah State is led by a pair of players scoring in double figures including junior Sam Merrill (18.7 ppg) and freshman Neemias Queta (11.0 ppg). Queta is also the leading rebounder for the Aggies with 8.2 rebounds per game.
The Lobos are led by three players averaging scoring in double digits including senior Anthony Mathis (15.5), redshirt-sophomore Vance Jackson (12.8) and redshirt-junior Carlton Bragg (10.7). Bragg and Jackson also lead the Lobo rebounding effort with 7.5 and 7.3 per game, respectively.
Mathis is also currently 10th in the nation in 3-point field goals per game (3.63) and 15th in total 3-point field goals made (69) while checking in at 27th in the nation in 3-point field goal percentage (43.9).
SERIES HISTORY
Utah State leads the overall series 23-11 and leads 10-8 in Albuquerque, including a 3-2 mark in The Pit. Last time the two teams faced off was in the 2018 Mountain West Championship Semifinals where the Lobos claimed an 83-68 victory to advance to the championship.
The Lobos and the Aggies met three times last season, Utah State claimed the first meeting 89-80 in Logan before the Lobos won in Albuquerque and again in Las Vegas.
THE COACHES
Head coach Paul Weir is 28-25 in his second season with the Lobos, 56-31 in his third season as a head coach. Utah State head coach Craig Smith is 14-5 in his first season at the helm of the Aggies and 165-89 in his career.
