ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— One day after Jay Griffin IV broke the UNM school record in the 200-meter dash, The University of New Mexico track and field team continued the momentum on day two as the Lobos almost produced another school record in the penultimate event of the two-day Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Collegiate Invitational on Saturday at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
The men’s 4×400 relay team comprised of Carlos Salcido, Ben Parmoon, Isaac Cole and Jameel Austin narrowly beat out two University of Southern California teams by 0.15 seconds to claim the event win, and in the process, tested the school record. The quartet’s time of 3:11.92 (3:12.36 with altitude conversion) was just 1.57 seconds slower than the UNM indoor record set on Feb. 25, 2017.
“For our men’s 4×4 to go out and upset Southern California in the 4×4 relay shows the history and tradition that we have,” head coach Joe Franklin said.
