Jared Mang and Chad Smith named as captains

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – With just under 30 days until Opening Day of the 2019 college baseball season, the University of New Mexico baseball team has announced that the senior duo of Jared Mang and Chad Smith have been named as team captains for the upcoming season.

“It’s perfect,” said head baseball coach Ray Birmingham. “Jared and Chad are two fierce competitors from the state of New Mexico and to have them as captains on New Mexico’s team is special. All the other college teams in the state recruit primarily out of state. We don’t! Our captains this year will fight for New Mexico!”

Mang is a three-year starting outfielder from Los Alamos, N.M., while Smith is a right-handed reliever from Albuquerque.

During his career, Mang is a .328 hitter (170-for-518) with 127 runs scored, 30 doubles, four triples, 20 home runs and 121 RBI. An All-Mountain West First Team selection as a sophomore, Mang has also excelled in the class room as he has been a two-time Academic All-District® honoree as well as an Academic All-American®.

Smith is a two-year letterwinner for the Lobos after spending his freshman season at New Mexico Military Institute. In his time at UNM, Smith as appeared in 33 games out of the bullpen and logged 32.2 innings of work.

As captains, Mang and Smith will lead the Lobos through their 2019 campaign, which begins on February 15 in Surprise, Ariz. for the College Baseball Classic.
