ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico men’s basketball team looks to continue its 2-0 Mountain West conference streak as it hosts UNLV on Tuesday night at 9 p.m. on ESPN2.
Both New Mexico (8-6, 2-0 MW) and UNLV (8-6, 2-0 MW) enter Tuesday night’s matchup undefeated in Mountain West play. UNM is on a three-game win streak and comes off of a 27-point victory over then-No. 5/6 Nevada on Saturday night. The victory broke the UNM record for largest victory margin over a top-10 ranked team, surpassing the previous record of 20 points set on June 29, 1974 against No. 8 New Mexico State (88-68).
Saturday’s game also marked the first time the Lobos topped a ranked team since Jan. 3, 2015 when UNM claimed a 66-53 win over No. 24 Colorado State in Albuquerque.
UNLV earned a pair of victories at home over Colorado State (78-76) and Wyoming (68-56) last week to start out their conference season 2-0.
Senior Anthony Mathis enters the game fresh off of his first Mountain West Player of the Week honor after putting up a career-high 27 points against Nevada. He is currently ranked seventh in the nation in 3-point field goals per game (3.79) and 14th in total 3-pointers made on the season (53).
SERIES HISTORY
UNLV leads the series that dates back to 1976 (33-25), but UNM is 3-0 over the last three contests and 2-0 in the Paul Weir era.
Last time the two teams met was on Feb. 25, 2018 when the Lobos claimed a 91-90 victory in a thriller at The Pit. Sophomore Makuach Maluach nailed the go-ahead 3-pointer for the win with 16 seconds left. Both games last season were close as the Lobos pulled off an 85-81 win in Las Vegas.
THE COACHES
Head coach Paul Weir is 27-21 in his second season with the Lobos, 55-27 in his third season as a head coach. UNLV head coach Marvin Menzies is 39-40 in his third season at the helm of the Runnin’ Rebels, 237-151 in his 12th season as a head coach.
Tuesday’s game will pit former colleagues against each other as Weir was Menzies’ assistant and associate head coach at New Mexico State for nearly a decade.
