Mathis Named Mountain West Player of the Week
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Senior Anthony Mathis of The University of New Mexico men’s basketball team was named Mountain West Player of the Week on Monday following an impressive showing in the Lobos’ 27-point victory over No. 5/6 Nevada on Saturday night.
The honor marks the first of his career after he put up a career-high 27 points and tied his career-best six rebounds against the Wolf Pack inside The Pit.
Mathis averaged 22.0 points per game on the week going 12-for-31 (.387) from the field including 8-for-23 (.348) from behind the arc. He led UNM to a pair of victories over Air Force and No. 5/6 Nevada as the team’s leading scorer in both contests to help the Lobos kick of conference play 2-0. He also went 12-for-14 from the free throw line on the week after entering Saturday’s game ranked 14th in the nation in free-throw percentage.
On Wednesday against Air Force, Mathis led the Lobos to victory with a team-best 17 points, all of which he scored in the second half including 13 straight.
Mathis is currently ranked sixth in the nation in 3-point field goals per game with 3.79, 11th in total 3-pointers made, 22nd in free throw percentage and 33rd in 3-point field goal percentage.
After posting double figures in all but two of UNM’s 14 games so far this season, Mathis has amassed 229 points and has reached 748 career points. He averages 16.4 points per game and has just 252 points more to go before reaching the 1,000 point mark.
Mathis and the rest of the Lobos return to action on Tuesday, Jan. 8 as they host UNLV for their third Mountain West matchup of the season.
