Home unbeaten streak snapped by Wyoming 3-2

BOX SCORE | SEASON STATS

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – There were plenty of ups and downs on Sunday as The University of New Mexico women’s soccer team took on Wyoming in a Mountain West Conference match at the UNM Soccer Complex.

The ups began with the Lobos (5-4-0, 1-1-0) taking an early 1-0 lead on a Gwen Maly goal in the 13th minute. The downs, however, ended with a late goal by Wyoming in the 84th minute that broke a two-all tie. The Cowgirls (6-2-2, 1-1-0) would make that late goal stand up en route to a 3-2 win over the Lobos.

The loss snapped UNM’s unblemished 5-0-0 record at home.

Less than a minute after Maly gave the Lobos the 1-0 lead, Wyoming answered right back as Summer Taube put home a penalty kick in the 14th minute.

That knotted score held through the remainder of the first half, but it almost was not the case as the Cowgirls were awarded a second penalty kick opportunity in the 36th minute. This time, however, Lobo goal keeper Emily Johnson stoned the attempt as she dove to her right to make the save.

Out of the break, the Lobos were again able to find the back of the next quickly, this time just about four minutes into play as Madi Hirschman collected a rebounded header and fired it to the left side of the net for her second goal of the season.

Unfortunately, the one-goal Lobo lead did not hold for long once more as the Cowgirls scored the equalizing goal in the 57th minute.

Knotted a two-all, Wyoming registered the game-winning goal as Taube scored her second goal of the game. This time, it was Taube who collected a rebound off of a header in the box that was initially saved by Jonson, but Taube was able to finish the chance.

The Lobos will now prepare for their first road trip in Mountain West Conference play. UNM will take on Fresno State on Friday at 8 p.m. (MT) and San José State at 2 p.m. (MT) on Sunday.
