“We started a couple of years ago with wanting to do something for the high school coaches in New Mexico,” noted Bradbury. “As the flagship University in the state, we wanted to build a good relationship with all of the high school coaches and that’s how it started.
“We had great speakers last year,” added Bradbury. “After feedback from the coaches last year of what they wanted and based on what they said, we tried to get people in those areas to fulfill that.”
Griffin opened the clinic with a session on player development – the importance of it and demonstrated drills to help cultivate player development.
“I wanted to make sure I did a few different things,” remarked Griffin on what he wanted to convey to the coaches in attendance. “I wanted to make sure they knew how to challenge their kids, how to communicate to their kids, and which parts of basketball should be foundational to each kid that’s trying to become the best they can.”
Coach Jonathan Tsipis of Wisconsin then talked through and demonstrated special situations.
“Part of my background is when other head coaches have really helped me,” said Tsipis. “Any chance I can get if I can fit it in, whether it is youth groups, middle school, high school I love that opportunity and knowing that I am going to learn a lot at any clinic as well to be able to take back to our own program.”
Following Tsipis, Coach Mandy Montoya of Northern New Mexico held a session on competitive shooting drills while Coach Brian Rosario of Chandler Community College demonstrated defensive skills and drills. Just before an interactive lunch break, Coaches Bradbury and Tsipis showcased a late game situation duel.
The lunch break could have been characterized as a whiteboard session as Coach Bradbury fielded directed questions from the attending coached related to various in-game strategies. As a question was posed, Bradbury addressed them on a whiteboard and played out schematic scenarios.
The clinic was closed out by UNM women’s basketball strength and conditioning coach Jeremy Golden, who demonstrated several basketball-related warm-up and conditioning drills.
Bradbury and the Lobos continue to inch closer to the 2018-19 campaign. Be sure to keep up with Lobo Women’s Basketball on social media @UNMLoboWBB.
