Men's Basketball Partners with APD for VIN Etching Event

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico men’s basketball team is partnering with the Albuquerque Police Department for a special VIN etching event on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Northeast parking lot of Dreamstyle Arena – The Pit. The event is free and aims to reduce occurrences of vehicle theft in Albuquerque.

Community members and fans are encouraged to come and take part in the FREE event to have their vehicles etched. The etching of VIN numbers helps deter vehicle theft and also provides a higher rate of recovery for vehicles that are stolen. Lobo men’s basketball players will be on hand for the Meet & Greet at the event.

What is VIN etching? VIN etching involves making a small acid etch of a vehicle’s 17 digit VIN number on all four windows of the vehicle. If the vehicle is ever stolen, the VIN etch allows officers to quickly identify the rightful owner of the vehicle, even if the thieves removed the VIN plate.

“I have to credit the APD for initiating a great connection with Lobo Football. That rolled over into our program and I wanted to do something where we could directly participate in helping our community,” head coach Paul Weir said. “To play just a small piece of assisting with auto theft issues in Albuquerque is a great opportunity for our young men to share in making our city a safer place.”
