Lobos Fall 1-0 as Two-Match Winning Streak Ends
DAVIS, Calif. — The New Mexico Lobos outshot UC Davis 11-8, but couldn’t pierce the net in a 1-0 loss to the Aggies in Davis, California, dropping UNM to 2-2-0 on the season and ending a modest two-match winning streak.
The lone goal of the match was scored with just 3:34 left in the opening half when Mahiah Catline took an Olivia Jones passes and beat Emily Johnson for a 1-0 lead. That goal held up for Davis (3-2-0).
Along with UNM’s 11-8 advantage in shots, the Lobos led in shots on goal 4-3. The Lobos had several chances in the first half, but just one on net in the second half, when Gwen Maly’s shot was saved by Alexis Smith, who had four saves in recording the shutout. Emily Johnson was credited with the loss, allowing the lone tally. She was relieved in the second half by Malia Vanisi, who made one save. UNM also had a team save with a ball cleared off the line.
UNM does not get the chance to rest as the Lobos travel to the University of San Francisco for a Sunday match at 2 p.m. against the Dons.
