Lobos Blitz Idaho State 5-0 for Second Straight Win

BOX SCORE | SEASON STATS
(8/26/2018) Women’s Soccer defeated Idaho State 5-0ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — On Friday night, four Lobos scored in a 4-2 win over Pacific.  Sunday was better.  Five Lobos scored, including three freshmen, and UNM’s two keepers provided a clean sheet as the Lobos pounced and took care of the visiting Idaho State Bengals 5-0 at the UNM Soccer Complex in front of 395 fans on a hot Sunday afternoon.

The Lobos improved to 2-1-0 on the season and now head west to take on UC Davis on Friday and San Francisco on Sunday.  Idaho State dropped to 0-2-0.

UNM got on the board first, and it was a freshman that did the trick.  Amelia Bierle sent a perfect through pass towards the Bengal goal, and Alesia Garcia raced onto it and slid it past Katie Hogarth for a 1-0 lead.  That goal would turn out to be the game-winner, giving the Lobo rookie two game winning goals on the weekend, as she had the third of four goals in the win over Pacific.

Garcia’s goal came at the 20:11 mark and it opened the floodgates as UNM would push that lead from 1-0 to 4-0 rather quickly.  First Jessie Hix headed in a free kick from Jennifer Muñoz for her second of the season and 12th of her career to make it 2-0 at the 29:02 mark.

Eight minutes later, Madi Hirschman, who had just entered the game, picked up a ball on the right side, beat a defender and sent a pass to the back post when Jadyn Edwards ran onto it and placed it home for a 3-0 lead.  Hirschman that quickly added a goal to that assist, taking a pass from Lexi Baca and hammering home a blistering shot into the back 90 for a 4-0 lead, and giving UNM two goals in just 52 seconds.

UNM took that lead into the half, and added one more tally in the second half as Baca took a pass from Hirschman and scored from near the penalty spot for a 5-0 lead.  That goal gave Hirschman a four-point day, and the only drama was if UNM could keep Idaho State off the scoreboard.  Using both keepers, Emily Johnson started and finished, making two saves, and Malia Vanisi played the middle 40 minutes, with one save.

Each team had chances to add to their totals.  Idaho State twice hit the crossbar, including a late shot from about 35-yards out by Rachel Brownell.  For UNM, Jessica Nelson hit a scorcher that caromed off the crossbar back into play right to Alexa Kirton, whose follow just sailed wide.

Over, UNM outshot Idaho State 21-8, and 13-3 on net, while leading 11-1 in corners.

NOTES:  Vanisi, who had an assist on Friday in her first collegiate game, nearly got a second assist as a keeper, as her punt was taken by Madi Hirschman and only a diving save by Laule’a Phillips prevented a goal … the five goals marks a tie for the most goals scored by UNM under Heather Dyche, having beaten Fresno State 5-1 in 2015 and Pacific 5-2 in 2016 … all five goals by New Mexico were assisted … UNM improved to 4-0-0 against Idaho State all-time.
