Lobos Cruise in Exhibition Opener 7-0

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Seven was a lucky number for The University of New Mexico women’s soccer team as the Lobos pounded out seven goals on 29 shots in an easy 7-0 win over the CSU Pueblo Thunderwolves in the lone exhibition game for the team.

Everyone seemed to get into the act for the Lobos in a game in which the two teams played three 30-minute periods, as opposed to the normal two 45-minute halves.  Despite dominating the opening 30 minutes, UNM couldn’t pierce the net until there were just 32 seconds left in the opening period.  Jessica Nelson’s flip throw was headed in to the near side by Jesse Hix for a 1-0 lead.  The goal was one of two on the night for Hix, and she was one of three Lobos to pick up a brace in the game.

After that goal, the floodgates opened in the second period as UNM scored four times in the stanza.  Nelson got into the goal column with a perfect free kick that just went over the outstretched hands of CSU Pueblo netminder Rylie Martin and into the backside netting for a 2-0 lead.

Hix completed her brace after taking a pass from Alesia Garcia and blasting one home at the 43:01 mark.  Madi Hirschman then got into the act, scoring twice in just 1:11.  First she took a pass and broke through on a breakaway.  Her first shot was saved by Martin, but the rebound went off to the side and she slid it home for a 4-0 lead.  Just 71 seconds later, Jadyn Edwards lofted a pass to the back post, and Hirschman was alone to tap it home for a 5-0 lead.

Hirschman added a sixth point in the final period with an assist to Jennifer Muñoz, who hammered one home with 27:09 to go.  Muñoz added an unassisted tally at the 66:04 mark to close out the scoring.

The Lobos dominated possession and most facets of the game, outshooting CSUP 29-2.  The only shot on net for the Thunderwolves came late, and Emily Johnson was there for the save.  Johnson started and played 45:37 to earn the win, while Malia Vanisi played 44:23 in relief.
