ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico men’s basketball team will finish off its’ four-game home stand on Saturday afternoon as the Lobos take on the Penn Quakers at 2 p.m. in Dreamstyle Arena – The Pit. 

Penn (9-2) entered the 2018-19 season coming off of a 2018 NCAA Tournament appearance and picked up where it left off. The team has played a pair of ranked teams this season including then-No. 12 Kansas State (L, 64-48) and most recently No. 17 Villanova on Dec. 11 (W, 78-75). Villanova is now receiving votes in the national polls and Penn has not played since their meeting. 

The Quakers are off to their best 11-game start since 1994-95 when the team also started 9-2 and enter Saturday riding a five-game win streak.

The Lobos (5-5) enter Saturday’s game coming off of a tough loss to (RV) North Texas on Tuesday night 74-65. North Texas and Penn will serve as back-to-back competitive opponents for the Lobos, both of which will have 10 days or more to prepare to face UNM.

UNM is currently ranked 27th in the nation in 3-point field goals per game with 9.9. Senior Anthony Mathis is ranked 16th in the nation in 3-point field goals per game (3.60), 24th in free-throw percentage (90.3) and 38th in total 3-point field goals (36).

SERIES HISTORY
Saturday’s game will mark just the second between the Lobos and the Quakers. UNM claimed the first in the Lobo Invitational by a score of 54-51 in the Championship game on Dec. 29, 1992 in The Pit.

THE COACHES
Head coach Paul Weir is 24-20 in his second season with the Lobos, 52-26 in his third season as a head coach. Penn head coach Steve Donahue is 57-43 in his fourth season with the Quakers and 257-257 overall in his 18th season.
