ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico men’s basketball team continues its road trip with a Tuesday clash at in-state rival New Mexico State in Las Cruces at 7 p.m. The Aggies topped the Lobos in Dreamstyle Arena – The Pit on Nov. 17 in a disappointing Lobo loss in the Rio Grande Rivalry.
The Lobos (4-1) and the Aggies (6-1) have not lost since the last time they met as UNM has won two straight and NM State has won three.
In UNM’s last outing at Bradley on Saturday night, senior Anthony Mathis led the Lobos with 23 points including seven 3-pointers to tie his career high. He was joined by two more Lobos in double figures including junior Corey Manigault (18) and senior Dane Kuiper (15). Manigault also registered his second double-double of the season with 11 rebounds.
NM State comes off of a victory over Washington State at home in the Pan American Center on Saturday. The Aggies knocked off the Power-5 opponent by a score of 69-63.
SERIES HISTORY
Tuesday’s game marks the 222nd meeting between the Aggies and the Lobos in the Rio Grande Rivalry. The Lobos lead the series 121-100 however, the Aggies are currently on a four-win streak for the first time since 1994 after their win at Dreamstyle Arena – The Pit on Nov. 17. The Aggies have not won five straight games in the series since the span between 1954 – 1956. The Aggies hold a 60-46 advantage in Las Cruces.
THE COACHES
UNM head coach Paul Weir, formerly of NMSU, is 23-16 in his second season with the Lobos. He recently reached his 50th career victory and after Saturday’s win over Bradley is now 51-22 overall. Weir’s replacement at NM State is Chris Jans who is 34-7 with the Aggies, 55-19 in his third season as a head coach.
