ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico men’s basketball team is set to finish its three-game road stint with a neutral matchup in the 2018 Basketball Hall of Fame Classic against Saint Mary’s on Friday, Dec. 7 at the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, Calif.
The Lobos (4-2) enter the game coming off of a two-game road trip that started with a solid win against Bradley on Saturday and finished with a tough loss at in-state rival New Mexico State on Tuesday.
The Gaels (5-4), who are coming off of a 30-6 season in which they advanced to the NIT Quarterfinals, won their first three games of 2018-19 before falling in four straight. SMC enters Friday’s game having won its last two games.
The game will mark the first of the 2018 Hall of Fame Classic that will also feature USC, TCU, No. 20 Arizona and No. 5 Nevada.
SERIES HISTORY
Friday’s game marks the third meeting between the two squads. The last time the Lobos and the Gaels met was on Dec. 28, 2001 in Albuquerque when UNM earned a 72-62 victory. The teams’ first meeting was on Dec. 17, 1968, also in Albuquerque. The Lobos claimed a 77-55 win.
THE COACHES
UNM is led by second-year head coach Paul Weir and is 23-17 as a Lobo, 51-23 in his career (three seasons). Saint Mary’s head coach Randy Bennett is 397-166 in his 18th season at the helm of the Gaels and in his career.
