2018 National Fall Championships Men’s Draw

TEMPE, Ariz. — Ricky Hernandez Tong of The University of New Mexico became the first Lobo in 15 years to win an ITA Mountain Region title.  Now, he gets to put that title on the line in the opening round of the 2018 National Fall Championships.  Hernandez Tong drew Miami sophomore Adria Soriano Berrera in the round of 64, slated for 1 p.m. on Wednesday.  The winner would advance to the round of 32 against either Harrison Scott of Texas or No. 4 seed Brandon Holt of USC.

The Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex in Surprise, Arizona, will serve as host to the culminating event of the fall portion of the college tennis season, as the nation’s best singles and doubles players compete in the 2018 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, with matches beginning Wednesday, November 7th, and concluding on Sunday, November 11th.

In its second year, having replaced the ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships is the lone event on the collegiate tennis calendar to feature competitors from all five divisions (NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and JUCO) playing in the same tournament.

The Oracle ITA National Fall Championships will feature a 64-player singles draw for men and women, while men’s and women’s doubles will consist of a 32-team draw. Players qualified for the tournament through designated placings at earlier ITA National Championships and the ITA Regional Championships. You can see a full breakdown of the selection criteria on the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships event page .

Hernandez Tong  was the Mountain Region’s No. 2 seed, and he swept Nevada’s Julien Evrard in straight sets 7-6, 6-3 to win the title.  It was sweet vindication for Hernandez tong, who had lost in the finals in 2017.  His opponent Soriano Berrera went 21-10 in singles as a freshman to earn All-ACC second team honors.  Soriano Berrera, currently ranked No. 41 in singles, lost in the Southeast Regional final but earned a bid to the tournament.   Hernandez Tong is ranked No. 105.
