ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – After a pair of relatively low-scoring games in the 2018 installment of the UNM baseball Cherry-Silver Series, game three saw a combined 19 runs, but 15 of those belonged to Cherry as they took a 2-1 series lead with a 15-4 win on Thursday night at Santa Ana Star Field.
A major contributing factor to the Cherry’s 15-run output was the bat of catcher Robby Campillo as he drove in six runs. The first four of his RBIs on the night came in the second inning when he hammered a grand slam out to left field. Two innings later, with two on and no outs, Campillo went the other way and laced a two-run double into right field.
To go along with his six RBIs, Campillo scored three runs himself to help the Cherry offense along.
In the inning that Campillo hit the grand slam, Cherry plated seven runs total to add to the run scored already in the first and suddenly it was 8-1, Cherry. Silver had scored their first run of the game in the top of the second as Brandon Langham’s leadoff double down the right field line came around to score on a RBI single to left by Cameron Stevenson.
A half inning after the monster second by Cherry, Silver added a run to make it an 8-2 game. That Silver run scored on a triple off the bat of Connor Mang.
In the bottom of the third, Cherry continued to add to their lead with a three-spot. Two of those three runs were unearned. An inning later, Cherry scored four runs to bring them to their total run production of 15. The first two scored on the aforementioned Campillo oppo-double, while Campillo scored the third run on a RBI single through the right side by Jeff Diemling. The final run saw Colton Onstott cross home plate on a groundout to first base off the bat of Jake Desiderio.
Silver scored twice in the top of the fifth to make it a 15-4 game, but could not add anymore as the contest was called in a run-rule shortened affair.
Game 4 of the series will be played on Friday, November 2. First-pitch is at 6 p.m. There will also be a Game 5 on Saturday, November 3 even if Cherry wins tomorrow to clinch the series.
