Tyson Dyer Named MW Special Teams Player of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — When you break, set or tie that many record with one kick, and it was just one of a host of great kicks, this was bound to happen.  Punter Tyson Dyer was named the Mountain West Special Teams Player of the Week by league officials on Monday after his record-setting performance against Air Force.  Along with Dyer, Utah State quarterback Jordan Love was the Offensive Player of the Week, and UNLV’s Jericho Flowers was the Defensive Player of the Week.

Dyer averaged a career-best 50.1 yards per punt on seven boots against Air Force, and his net was 45.2 for the game.  He had three punts of 50 or more yards, including a school record 84-yard punt that was downed at the Air Force 1-yard line.  That punt led to a UNM touchdown on the next play as UNM recovered a fumble on a quarterback sneak for a score.  Dyer’s 84-yard bomb was the longest in the FBS this season, the second-longest in the FBS in the last six yards (covering 46,990 punts), it was the longest by a Mountain West sophomore, and it was the fourth-longest in Mountain West history.

Dyer has proven to be a game-changer, and an effective replacement for Corey Bojorquez, who prior to going on injured reserve was the punter for the Buffalo Bills.  Dyer is now second in the league in punting at 44.7 yards per kick, and he is 16th nationally.  The sophomore is in his first season with UNM.  A native of Australia, Dyer is the first Aussie to play for Lobo Football.
