Maly Named Google Cloud Academic All-District

Google Cloud All-District Teams

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Gwen Maly of The University of New Mexico women’s soccer program was named Google Cloud Academic All-District, placing a student-athlete on the team for the 12th time in the last 13 seasons.

First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the Google Cloud Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second- and third-team (if necessary) Academic All-America® honorees will be announced in early December.  Maly is trying to become the fourth women’s soccer student-athlete to earn Academic All-America honors.

The Google Cloud Academic All-District® teams include student-athletes that are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. District 7, of which UNM is a part of, encompasses all Division I schools in Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Wyoming.

Maly, a senior biology major with a 4.20 GPA, had a terrific season in helping UNM win a share of just it’s third regular season conference title, and first since 2011.  Maly led the Lobos in scoring with seven goals and two assists for 16 points.  The seven goals tied for the team lead.  Maly scored against Pacific in the second game of the season, but she didn’t hit her stride until conference play.  She netted two goals in a wild 3-2 win over Utah State and she had the opening goal in a 3-3 tie with UNLV.

In the conference tournament, she assisted on Alesia Garcia’s overtime winner that gave UNM a 2-1 win over Wyoming, propelling them into the conference tournament championship match.  She also assisted on the winning goal in UNM’s regular season finale against San Diego State, a win that clinched a share of the title.

Maly, from Lake Forest, California, is the 29th Lobo women’s soccer player to earn Academic All-District honors.  For more information about CoSIDA’s Google Cloud Academic All-District® and Academic All-America® Teams program, visit AcademicAllAmerica.com or the Academic All-America® home page on CoSIDA.com.
