Google Cloud Academic All-District Teams
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Simon Spangenberg, Antoine Vial and Matt Dorsey of The University of New Mexico men’s soccer program were named Google Cloud Academic All-District, the eighth consecutive season that multiple Lobos have earned the honor in men’s soccer.
First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the Google Cloud Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second- and third-team (if necessary) Academic All-America® honorees will be announced in early December. The New Mexico men’s soccer program has had 27 Academic All-Americans, and since the official Academic All-America program was started by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America), New Mexico has had more Academic All-Americans than any other men’s soccer program, regardless of Division.
The Google Cloud Academic All-District® teams include student-athletes that are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. District 7, of which UNM is a part of, encompasses all Division I schools in Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Wyoming.
Spangenberg, who hails from Brussels, Belguim, is a three-time All-District honoree, and he was a Second Team Google Cloud Academic All-American in 2017. A senior with a 4.20 GPA in Computer Science and Applied Math, Spangenberg scored a pair of goals on the season, including the game-winner in a 2-0 win at Florida Atlantic.
Dorsey, from Spring, Texas, earned the honor for the first time in his career. A graduate student with a 3.85 GPA in business administration after earning his degree in communications, Dorsey had a pair of key goals late in the season. He scored the game-winner against South Carolina in a 2-1 win, scoring on a header with 5:27 to go in the game, and he also had a goal and as assist in UNM’s 2-2 draw with Marshall on Senior Night.
Vial, like Dorsey, earned the honor for the first time in his career. A senior with a 3.90 GPA in political science, Vial had seven points on the season with three goals and an assist. He scored the seasons’ opening goal in a 4-2 win over No. 22 Seattle. He added a goal and an assist in a 5-1 win over Cal State Fullerton, plus he scored UNM’s lone goal in a loss to Kentucky. Vial is originally from Sète, France.
Overall, Spangenberg, Dorsey and Vial are the 57th, 58th, and 59th Lobo men’s soccer student-athletes to earn All-District honors.
