Men’s Golf Finishes Fifth at Maridoe Intercollegiate

CARROLLTON, Texas — The University of New Mexico men’s golf team finished fifth out of 14 squads at the Maridoe Intercollegiate hosted by North Texas on Monday. The Lobos improved 13 strokes between the first two rounds and matched their second-round score in round three to move up a total of seven spots on the weekend.

The Lobos shot another 292 in round three (+12), tying for the third-best round-three score. UNM wrapped up the tournament with a combined team score of 889 (+49), just three strokes behind fourth-place Coastal Carolina and eight behind third-place host North Texas. 

Freshman Sam Choi led the Lobos on the leaderboard for the second tournament in a row as he shot a one under, 69 in round three. Choi improved 10 strokes after round one, from 82 to 72, before shaving off three more for a three-round total score of 223 (+13). He jumped up 25 spots on the leaderboard over the weekend to land in a tie for 18th. He recorded 13 pars on the day while consistently posting three birdies per round in the tournament. 

Choi also finished tied for eighth in total birdies (9) and tied for the sixth-best performer on par-5 holes, coming in at -3 in par-5 competition.

Sophomore Galven Green and freshman Ignacio Arcaya followed, finishing in a tie for 24th after shooting a 225 (+15) in the tournament. Green posted eight birdies over the weekend while Arcaya led the squad in pars, shooting a total of 34 in the three rounds of play. 

Just one stroke behind, senior Sean Carlon posted a final score of 16 over, 226 and recorded a trio of birdies in both the second and third rounds. Senior Augistin Holé shot seven birdies in the tournament and saw a final score of 231 (+21).

SMU took home first place at the tournament after shooting a 21 over, 861. The Mustangs finished 14 strokes ahead of second-place Texas A&M. Lone Mountain West competitor Boise State shot a 930 (+90) in the tournament, to finish 14th overall.

The Lobos’ season will continue October 19-21 as they head to Atlanta, Ga. for the Golf Club of Georgia Intercollegiate hosted by Georgia Tech.
