Dorsey Shines on Senior Day; Lobos Draw with Marshall
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico men’s soccer team played Marshall University to a 2-2 tie at the UNM Soccer Complex on Saturday night. UNM held a 2-0 lead in the first half, but Marshall found momentum and forced overtime after a pair of second-half goals with the equalizing score coming in the final minute of regulation.
The Lobos (4-10-1, C-USA 2-4-1) opened Senior Night with a strong pace, and senior Matt Dorsey was the vital part of the night. In the 27th minute of the match, the Lobos were able to force a turnover which gave Dorsey the ball. He then passed the ball to an open Nick Taylor who capitalized on the turnover, giving the Lobos a 1-0 lead over Marshall (5-8-3, C-USA 1-3-2).

“Tonight was a great one for Matt, he really showed up tonight – all three of our seniors played really well and it was a nice sendoff for them,” head coach Jeremy Fishbein said. “We’ve got incredible supporters and it was really great to have all of these people come out who are really attached to this team.
“We had the opportunity tonight to clinch the tournament and we’re still in the driver’s seat, but anything could happen. Right now, we’ve got to focus on our next match Saturday against Charlotte, they’re a good team and it will be a really good test for us.”
Within four minutes of the first goal, Dorsey was found with a similar opportunity. This time it was sophomore defender Nick Barreiro who found Dorsey near the back line of the Marshall defense. After the long pass from Barrerio, Dorsey was able to weave past defenders and find the back of the net, putting the Lobos up 2-0 in the 31st minute of the first half.

In the 51st minute of the match, Marshall was able to force a turnover and followed that with a goal from Gianni Bouzoukis. The game remained 2-1 in favor of the Lobos until the last minute of the match, where Marshall had a stopped-clock opportunity to tie the score off of a free kick from Jonas Westmeyer. The kick was good and forced the first of two eventual overtime periods.
The Lobos and Thundering Herd were unable to score in the extra periods as the game ended in a 2-2 tie.
Charlotte is next on the docket for UNM as they meet on Saturday, November 3rd in Charlotte. It will be the last regular season game for the Lobos, who are still in line for a berth into the upcoming Conference USA Tournament..
