UNM Receives Two First-Place Votes, Ranks Third in Poll

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—  The University of New Mexico women’s cross country team ranked third in the country in the latest USTFCCCA National Coaches’ Poll released on Tuesday.

The Lobos received 313 points, including two first-place votes, in the poll and fell just one point behind Boise State. Colorado received 322 points to retain the top spot and received the remaining nine first-place votes.

Oregon received 288 points to rank fourth and Arkansas jumped two spots to move into fifth with 286 points after winning the Cardinal race team title at the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals.

Stanford and Michigan ranked sixth and seventh, respectively, with the Wolverines moving up three spots. UNM competed against both teams in the White race at the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals, finishing 53 points ahead of Michigan, the second-place team, and 62 points ahead of Stanford, who placed third.

Villanova, BYU and Indiana rounded out the top 10.

The Lobos return to the course this Saturday at the Triton Classic Cross Country Invitational in La Jolla, Calif.  The men’s 8K will begin at 9 a.m. MT with the women’s 6K to follow at 10 a.m. MT.  This will be the final race before UNM competes in the Mountain West Championships on Friday, Oct. 26.
