UNM NOTES (PDF)

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Down to just Mountain West Conference games left on the 2018 regular season slate, the University of New Mexico women’s soccer team is looking to make strides in cementing their place in the upcoming Mountain West Tournament. This weekend will go a long way towards those aspirations and also provide an opportunity to turn some heads in the process as the Lobos are set to welcome league-leading Boise State to the UNM Soccer Complex on Friday night.

The Broncos are the lone undefeated team in the Mountain West at 4-0-0. They are winners of six-straight and are also pacing the league overall at 10-2-0. Leading the Broncos to the hot start to the season is junior forward Raimee Sherle. The Meridan, Idaho product will provide quite the test to the Lobo defense as she is leading all of NCAA Division I in goals scored as she has found the back of the net 16 times in 12 games.

Two days after the showdown with Boise State, the Lobos will look to turn around their fortunes in Sunday games as they remain home against Utah State. Through the first two weekends of Mountain West play, the Lobos are 2-0-0 on Friday, but 0-2-0 on Sunday. UNM’s Sunday opponent will have played San Diego State on the road on Friday, but enter the weekend 2-9-0 overall and 1-3-0 in Mountain West play.

HOME SWEET HOME
The UNM Soccer Complex has been good the Lobos this year as all but one of their wins this season have come at home. Sporting a 5-1-0 record in the Duke City, the Lobos have also displayed a potent offense as they have scored 17 goals in their six game at home, an average of 2.83 goals per game. With two home games on tap this weekend, the Lobos have four more game at home in 2018.

Who Scores First Matters
Through the first 10 games of the season, a significant stat has emerged for the Lobo women’s soccer team and it has to do with who scores first in a game. Currently UNM is 5-1-0 when they score first in a game. Conversely, the Lobos are 0-4 when the opponent registers the first score of a game.

Movin’ On Up …
Alesia Garcia has played in 10 games in her career, and her team has won six games. Garcia has netted the game-winning goal in three of those six wins. Garcia is already tied for the 12th-most game-winning goals in a single-season with those three.

Last season, Claire Lynch had the third-highest single-season total in school history with six. The interesting note is that Garcia is just two game-winning goals away from being in the top 10 all-time at UNM in career game-winning goals as a freshman.

Multiple Goals = Lobo Wins
Under Heather Dyche, the Lobos are 26-2-2 when scoring multiple goals in a game. The odd part of that stat is at one time UNM was 21-0-0. Then the oddities occurred. First, UNM lost on a free kick with seven seconds left in overtime in which the clock was stopped to allow the free kick to happen … that was a 4-3 loss. That was followed by a pair of come-from-behind 2-2 ties, one while playing with 10 players, the other without leading scorer Claire Lynch in the Mountain West Tournament. Since then, UNM is 5-1-0 in such games.

Record in the Classroom
Along with the success on the field, the UNM women’s soccer program is proving to be one of the top teams off of it as well as the Lobos put together a 3.77 GPA in the 2018 spring semester. It’s the 16th-consecutive semester UNM women’s soccer has put together a 3.4 GPA or better, and the 3.77 GPA tied with the spring semester of 2017 for the highest team GPA.

Keeping It Going
The Lobos have turned in winning records in 12 of the last 13 seasons, and in all three under Heather Dyche. UNM also has an all-time home record of 115-71-25 at the UNM Soccer Complex. UNM also has finished .500 or better in conference play for 10 straight seasons.
