SAN JOSE, Calif. – A tightly-contested first half yielded no score between the University of New Mexico and San Jose State University women’s soccer teams on Sunday afternoon, but less than 90 seconds into the second half, San Jose State scored what ended up being the game-winning goal as the Spartans held on for a 1-0 win over the Lobos.

In that first half, UNM led in total shots (5-4), and corner kicks (2-1), but as mentioned, nothing resulted in a goal for the Lobos (6-5-0, 2-2-0 MW) who were looking to build off of a 2-1 road win over Fresno State on Friday night. That win for the Lobos over the Bulldogs was their first road victory of the season, but the narrow defeat by the Spartans (4-5-2, 3-1-0 MW) on Sunday moved UNM’s road record to 1-4-0.

San Jose’s game-winning goal in the match came in the early goings of the second half. In the 47th minute, San Jose’s Jamilecxth Becerra fed the ball to Darriel Franklin, who took a shot on goal. Franklin’s shot initially hit the left post, but deflected into the goal for her second goal of the season.

Following that early goal in the second half, UNM was only able to register three shots the remainder of the game with one going on goal.

In goal, UNM’s Emily Johnson allowed one goal and made two saves in 90 minutes while her counterpart Paige Simoneau recorded her fifth shutout of the season stopping all four Lobo shots on goal.

UNM will now return home for a pair of crucial Mountain West Conference contests as they will host MW-leading Boise State on Friday and then Utah State on Sunday afternoon. At home, the Lobos are 5-1-0 this season.
