Garcia Named MW Offensive Player of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Lobo freshman Alesia Garcia’s first week is school turned out to be pretty great.  Garcia, who netted her first two goals at the close of her first week of college, was named the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week.  It was a weekend for first-year players in the Mountain West as another freshman, Nevada goalkeeper Kendal Stovall was the Defensive Player of the Week.

Garcia, who hails from Aurora, Colorado and prepped at Cherokee Trail High School, scored a pair of game-winning goals for the Lobos.  Against Pacific on Friday, August 24, Garcia came off the bench to score her first collegiate goal in the 72nd minute of play, that goal coming on her first collegiate shot attempt.

From there, she earned her first career start against Idaho State (August 26), and scored the opening goal on a breakaway after receiving a through pass from teammate Amelia Bierle. That gave her a second game-winner on the week.

For the week, Garcia scored two goals on two shots on net.  Garcia is tied with Jessie Hix (two goals) and Madi Hirschman (one goal, two assists) for the team lead in points with four.

The Lobos, 2-1-0 on the season, travel to take on UC Davis on Friday and San Francisco on Sunday.
