ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico men’s soccer team is set to host its season opener on Friday, August 24 at 7 p.m. at the UNM Soccer Complex against #22 Seattle. The match will be the first of two straight home contests, the second against #24 Washington on Monday night at 7 p.m.
The Lobos enter the two tough matchups coming off of a trio of exhibition matchups, the first a 5-2 victory over Fort Lewis, the next two a pair of draws against Denver (2-2), and Air Force (1-1). The losses were on the road, however, as head coach Jeremy Fishbein holds a 121-22-17 record at home at the UNM Soccer Complex.
Speaking of home-field advantage, the Lobos have lost just one match at home during the last two seasons and have fallen just three times in Albuquerque since 2015. UNM is 19-3-7 on its home turf since the 2015 season.
The Lobos are 4-1-0 all-time against Seattle after suffering a narrow 1-0 loss on the road in just their second game of the season last year. The Lobos entered the matchup ranked #20 in the nation. The game was the second of a pair of road openers that started with a 2-1 loss to then-#11 Washington. This season, the order may have changed, but UNM will still take on the pair of teams from the northwest to start their campaign.
UNM will resume competition Monday against Washington at home at 7 p.m. before taking to the road for three away contests.
