ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Head coach Paul Weir and The University of New Mexico men’s basketball program announce the official addition of Keith McGee to the 2018-19 roster. McGee was announced as signing with the Lobos in April, but has officially completed requirements to be added to the roster. A transfer from South Plans College, he will be eligible to compete this season.
“Keith has been working all summer long to graduate early and join us for the upcoming season. He has now fulfilled those requirements and is fully cleared for the upcoming season,” head coach Paul Weir said. “We look forward to adding him to our roster and having him for the next three years.”
The 6’2″ point guard played in 32 games for the Texans last season as a freshman, starting in 22. He averaged 21.2 minutes per game and posted 7.8 points and 2.4 rebounds per game while helping lead his South Plains squad to the 2018 NJCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship in March. For his outstanding efforts during the tournament, McGee was named the MVP for the 2018 NJCAA Tournament.
The Texans earned a 98-95 victory over College of Southern Idaho in which McGee helped lead South Plains with 20 points going 5-for-8 from the floor, 3-for-4 from 3-point range and 7-for-12 from the charity stripe in the championship.
On the season, McGee shot 48.6 percent from the field, 44.7 percent from behind the arc while averaging 2.7 assists per game.
