ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Allison Weiss, formerly of the University of Denver, and Daniel Gallegos of Southern Arkansas University, have been named assistant communications directors at The University of New Mexico. Weiss will work primarily with volleyball, softball, UNM’s track programs, and swimming and diving, while Gallegos will work with UNM’s women’s basketball and baseball programs, as well as one other sport.
“I’m really excited about having Allison and Daniel join the Lobo team,” said Frank Mercogliano, Assistant A.D. for Communications. “Both have varied backgrounds and will bring some fresh ideas to UNM. Allison has been with some big programs and has done some outstanding work in her young career. Daniel has great administrative experience and has worked with several high-profile sports in his time, and his knowledge and familiarity with Albuquerque will be a great asset as well.”
Weiss will join the Lobos at the end of August. She handled all facets of publicity and social media at the University of Denver for the Pioneers’ volleyball program and women’s lacrosse program. While working with Denver she aided in the hosting of the 2017 Summit League Volleyball Tournament, which Denver hosted.
Previously, Weiss spent two years in the athletic communications office at The University of Oklahoma, serving as the lead contact for Oklahoma’s cross country and track and field programs, handling publicity, graphics and social media. While at Oklahoma, she also worked closely with the OU softball program including the 2016 College World Series. She also handled various duties associated with Sooner football and men’s basketball.
She earned her degree in political science from the University of Wisconsin in 2011, and a master’s in education from Oklahoma in 2017.
Gallegos will join the Lobos in September, and he comes fresh from a five year stint at Southern Arkansas, where he most recently served as the Assistant Athletic Director for Communications. Gallegos has helped further the Mulerider communications efforts, including a total website redesign, improved social media content, and complete livestreaming of nearly all home Mulerider athletic events. In addition to handling publicity for the 14-sport Division II Southern Arkansas department, he has helped host four NCAA Tournaments hosted by Southern Arkansas, including the 2018 baseball and softball regional tournaments, which were held at the same time
Gallegos, who grew up in Albuquerque and still has family in the Duke City, has also served in several athletic communication roles as an assistant at the University of the Ozarks, Allegheny College, and at Henderson State.
A graduate of the University of the Ozarks in May of 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Strategic Communications, Gallegos earned his Master’s Degree in Sports Administration from Henderson State in May of 2013.
Gallegos is married to the former Kylie Venable and the couple has one daughter, Parker Grace. The Gallegos’ currently reside in Magnolia.
