Softball Travels for Season Finale at Boise State

GAME NOTES

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico softball team is set to play its season finale with a three-game series at first-place Boise State beginning Thursday, May 10 through Saturday, May 12. Game times are set for 4 p.m., 4 p.m. and 12 p.m. MT.

The Lobos (14-36, 7-14 MW) are headed into the series coming off of some of their best play of the season. UNM is 3-7 in its last 10 games, but five of those seven losses were by just two runs or less, including against #10 Arizona. Boise State is 37-14, 15-6 in the league and 10-1 in its last 11 games.

LAST TIME OUT
-The Lobos clinched their first conference series victory of the season on Sunday going 2-1 over the visiting San Diego State Aztecs this past weekend. UNM took game one 5-2, fell in game two 7-3 and claimed the series with a 4-1 victory on Sunday.
-Senior Chelsea Johnson had a standout week registering three homeruns and seven RBI for her senior weekend. She finished the week batting .667 at 6-for-9 from the plate.
-As a team, the Lobos smashed seven homeruns on the weekend including three from Johnson and two each from sophomore Cameryn O’Grady and junior D’Andra DeFlora.

ENDING ON THE RIGHT NOTE
-The Lobos have struggled for the W throughout the season, but as 2018 has progressed, UNM has been steadily improving heading into competition with the top-ranked squad in the league.
-In the last two weeks, the Lobos have demonstrated significant improvement and come away with some solid results. 
-Since their 7-0 loss at UTEP on April 16, the Lobos have gone 3-7 but lost five of those games by just two runs or less – that includes a narrow 3-1 loss to #10 Arizona.
-The Lobos dropped seven conference games in limited innings prior to that game at UTEP but have not fallen by more than four runs in a MW matchup since then.

STELLAR SENIORS
-With senior Chelsea Johnson’s three homeruns this past weekend, she rises to 34 career homeruns, ranking fourth in UNM history. She also cements herself in the single-season records with 10 homeruns (tied for seventh) for the second time in her career. In 2016, she found herself tied for sixth with 11.
-Senior Krissy Fortner registered her first and second saves of the season this past weekend, elevating her own UNM record to 17 career saves.

LOBO STAT LEADERS
-Senior Chelsea Johnson is currently leading the Lobos with a .345 batting average. She posts a team-high 51 hits on a team-most 10 homeruns, seven doubles and one triple, tallying a team-best 39 RBI.
-Freshman Andrea Howard follows Johnson with a .301 average. She has registered 37 hits including five doubles, one triple and six homeruns. She is tied for second on the team in homers with junior D’Andra DeFlora who has posted 29 hits including three doubles and six homeruns.
-Sophomore Cameryn O’Grady is batting .296 with 40 hits including a team-most 11 doubles and four triples to go along with four homeruns.

RECORD WATCH
-Senior Chelsea Johnson currently ranks fourth in program history in career homeruns with 34. The overall record is 39.
-Johnson ranks third in program history in RBI with 138. 
-Johnson is seventh in Lobo history in total bases (305).
-Senior Krissy Fortner ranks 4th in UNM history in appearances with 111 and also holds the Lobo record for most career saves at 17.
-Sophomore Cameryn O’Grady is currently tied for sixth in Lobo history with 31 walks in a single season.
