ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Head coach Paula Congleton and The University of New Mexico softball program have added outfielder Skylar Jenkins to the 2019 roster, the program announced Monday. Jenkins will enter UNM as a freshman in the fall.
A native of Lawrenceville, Ga., Jenkins comes to the Lobos from Buford High School where she helped her team to the 2016 Softball State Championship, marking Buford’s 10th consecutive state championship. As a senior she is currently batting .415, following up a .400 junior campaign.
“Skylar will have an immediate impact on our program with her athleticism and versatility,” Coach Congleton said. “She adds the depth we are looking for and when you watch Skylar play, you can’t watch without noticing that she is a big part of good things happening in the game. I am looking forward to having her passion and hard work pay off for the Lobos.”
Jenkins competed at the club level with the Georgia Fire and Southern Force squads and was also named to the 2016 Scout All-America Team.
“I chose to attend The University of New Mexico because it is an extremely diverse community, the University is among the premiere universities in the country and the new softball staff came highly recommended by Baseball/Softball Rebellion and Scout-Softball,” Jenkins said. “I visited UNM two years ago and I loved it. I am hopeful to contribute to the national presence the new softball staff is building.”
Not only was Jenkins a standout on the softball field, she was also a three-year letterwinner in track and finished third in the state in the 4×400 relay as a junior.
